General questions
Do I need a work visa if I am only paid prize money?
It depends on the country. Some countries treat prize-money-only competition as a visitor activity, for example the US business visitor rules, while others look at whether you are invited or engaged by a local organisation. Check the rules for your destination before you travel on a visitor visa. See Sports events and short tours in Australia for Australia.
Can amateur teams travel on tourist visas?
Usually yes, if no one is paid by a local organisation and the trip is genuinely temporary. Most countries require an electronic travel authority or visitor visa, such as Australia’s eVisitor or ETA, New Zealand’s NZeTA, the UK ETA, the US ESTA or Canada’s eTA.
Do coaches and support staff need their own visas?
Yes. Every person travelling needs their own visa or travel authority. Essential staff travelling with a team can often apply on the same basis as the team.
How early should I apply?
For a contracted season, start 3 to 6 months ahead. For events, start at least 2 to 3 months ahead, especially for large squads.
What happens if I travel on the wrong visa?
You may be refused entry, have your visa cancelled, or have trouble getting future visas. Professional activity on a visitor visa is a common cause.
Can I bring my family?
Most work visas allow your partner and children to come, but work rights for family members vary. New Zealand’s Specific Purpose Work Visa requires family to apply separately.
Australia
Which visa do overseas players and coaches need for an Australian club season?
Usually the Temporary Activity (408) visa in the Sporting activities stream, with a national body endorsement and a sponsor or supporter. See 408 Sports visa (Sporting Activities stream).
How much is the 408 visa?
AUD 535 for the main applicant from 1 July 2026.
Can a local club sign more than two overseas players?
Policy guidance says clubs below the national level should generally have no more than two contracted overseas professionals at any one time.
Can athletes get permanent residence?
Elite athletes and coaches may qualify for the National Innovation visa, and employees on a 482 may move to a 186 after 2 years with their sponsor. See National Innovation visa for elite athletes and coaches and 482 and 186 visas for sports coaches, athletes and staff.
Is esports covered by the 408 sports stream?
No. Only activities recognised as a sport by the Australian Sports Commission qualify, and esports is not included.
New Zealand
How long can a professional player stay in New Zealand?
Up to 36 months on a Specific Purpose Work Visa if you play at national or regional level, or 12 months below that level. See NZ sports work visas for players, coaches and officials.
Can I come to New Zealand for a tournament?
Yes, the Sports Events Visitor Visa covers players, support staff, officials and media for up to 3 months.
Is there a residence pathway for athletes?
The Talent (Arts, Culture, Sports) Work Visa can lead to residence after 2 years actively engaged in your field in New Zealand.
United Kingdom
Which visa do I need to play professionally in the UK?
The International Sportsperson visa, which needs a sponsor licence holder and a governing body endorsement. See UK International Sportsperson visa guide.
How much does the International Sportsperson visa cost?
GBP 340 for up to 12 months, or GBP 819 from outside the UK for longer stays, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of GBP 1,035 a year (fees from 8 April 2026).
Can I settle in the UK as a sportsperson?
Yes, the route currently allows settlement after 5 years, as long as you have held at least one visa of more than 12 months.
United States
Should I apply for a P-1A or an O-1A?
P-1A suits internationally recognised athletes and teams coming to compete; O-1A suits individuals with extraordinary ability and outstanding personal records, including coaches. See P-1 and O-1 visas for athletes and coaches.
Can I file my own P-1 or O-1 petition?
No. A US employer, team, agent or sponsoring organisation must file.
How quickly can a petition be approved?
Premium processing (USD 2,965) gives a USCIS decision within 15 business days, but you still need a consular visa appointment.
Can one petition cover several US events or employers?
Yes, in many cases a US agent can file one petition covering several engagements, with a full itinerary of events, dates and locations.
Canada
Do I need a work permit to compete in Canada?
Not usually if you play for a foreign-based team or compete as an individual based abroad. You still need an eTA or visitor visa. See Canada work permits for athletes and coaches.
Do professional players on Canadian teams need an LMIA?
Often not, because of the reciprocal employment exemption. The team submits the offer and pays a CAD 230 compliance fee.
Do referees and judges need a work permit in Canada?
Judges, referees and similar officials at international amateur competitions generally do not need a work permit, but they still need an eTA or visitor visa. Officials employed by Canadian leagues may need a permit.
Clubs, academies and event organisers
Does our club need to be approved before we sign an overseas player?
In most countries, yes. Australian clubs need temporary activities sponsorship for longer stays, UK clubs need a sponsor licence, US teams file a petition and Canadian teams submit an offer of employment. See Sports club and organisation visa guide.
Who arranges the national or governing body endorsement?
Usually the club or the player applies, but the endorsing body is the national sporting organisation in Australia and the governing body for the sport in the UK. Allow several weeks.
Can we sponsor support staff such as physios and analysts?
Often yes, but usually through general employer sponsored visas rather than the sports streams. In Australia, that is commonly the 482 visa. See 482 and 186 visas for sports coaches, athletes and staff.
What does a supporter letter need to include?
For Australian events, the letter should be on letterhead and name each participant and any family members, describe the activity, and say when and where it will happen.
