Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to play sport overseas?
For unpaid amateur sport, a visitor option such as an ETA, eVisitor, NZeTA, UK ETA, ESTA or eTA is usually the cheapest. Paid or contracted sport needs a work-related visa, which costs more.
Who pays for a sports visa, the club or the player?
It depends on the contract and the country. Some employer costs cannot legally be passed to the worker, such as Australian nomination costs and the Skilling Australians Fund levy, and US return transport costs in some cases. Agree who pays what in writing.
Are visa fees refundable if the application is refused?
Generally no. Government charges are usually not refunded if a visa is refused, which is why getting the right visa and evidence first time matters.
Why is the US so much more expensive?
US work visas for athletes need a USCIS petition, the Asylum Program Fee and a consular visa fee, and many teams add premium processing to meet season deadlines.
Do family members pay the same fees?
Often, but not always. In Australia, additional applicants usually pay a lower or separate charge depending on the visa. In the UK, each dependant pays the full application fee and the health surcharge.
How often do these fees change?
Australia usually adjusts charges on 1 July, the UK changed fees on 8 April 2026, and the USA and Canada change fees from time to time. We check the current fee before every application.
